Virginia Home Improvement – Light Colors Work Best

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Winter has a way of sending people packing, and not to the warmer climates. Many want to curl up and stay inside. They’re either hibernating & waiting it out or they turn their attention to Virginia home improvement inside their home to pass the time. One of the most common choices is painting and it’s a great way to enhance the value of a home on the fly and pass those winter blues.

Few go through the motion of painting every room, but tackling just 1 or 2 smaller rooms in order to make the home feel bigger and give it a refreshed look is a smashing idea. New color, in the right shades and tones, can really open up the rooms in a home and it’s amazing just what color can do for the space inside a home. Color can have a huge impact on how people view a home and those that live within as well as the comfort level of a room – it’s important to keep this in mind with your next home improvement project.

The light shades and light colors is probably the best place to start when you’re considering repainting your rooms during the winter season. Light colors, of almost any kind, can help create the illusion that you have more space to offer. The lighter the color you paint on the walls and ceiling the more open a room becomes to those who enter – this is why just about every home starts with a simple white pallete.

Darker shades of course do the opposite within a room and make the walls and ceiling appear much closer than they actually are – mainly because darker tones and deep colors absorb more light and give a stifling sense of everything closing in. If you have to paint a small room, dark colors are a decoration no-no that will make your room feel like a walk in closet. Earth tones, while darker, may be the exception as some people find earth tones welcoming, like the open outdoors.

For a small room during a Virginia home improvement process, it’s often best to stick with just a single color and avoid trying to do multi-color patterns or more than one tone. This gives your room a united look. Multi-colors of color paneling can actually make a small room look like it’s cut into smaller sections, thus giving the feeling of reduced living space overall.

Other factors are considered when it comes to making a room feel larger as well such as window placement, lighting and even the color of the floor and ceiling. It’s often recommend that the ceiling be painted a much lighter shade than the walls – or keep it white. This ensures that while the room may be small from a surrounding standpoint it can open up with the feeling of being “tall” or more open vertically.

Virginia Home Improvement – Tiny Room Budget Renovation Tips

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

There are a lot of ways to save money on your next Virginia home improvement project, you just have to be creative. There’s no reason for you to max out your budget on every project simply because you think it’s the way people do things in the world of home improvement. Check out some of these great ways that you can trim the cost of your next remodel

Skip The Crown Molding: When you’re working with a general contractor, the materials you use for molding can be extremely expensive and run up your overall budget. Instead of springing for expensive crown molding and other trim, just go with less-expensive wainscoting or a comfortable chair rail to add elegance to your room.

Go for Ceramic Tile: Ceramic tile can help create a very elegant ambiance in numerous rooms in your home. The style can carry over from the kitchen to the bathroom and even around the fireplace in your home. You can also mix a few pieces of expensive tile in with your ceramic tile to make a custom theme that adds much more value.

Mix Up the Lighting: Pricier eye-catching pieces are perfect for the home, but it’s not necessary to put an expensive light fixture in every room of the home. You can put these fixtures in the primary rooms and use less expensive off-the-shelf models for the secondary rooms, bedrooms, etc.

Save on Cabinets: Many homeowners want the best of the best in their kitchens but it’s not necessary to buy top of the line cabinets or countertops. In many cases, mid-range cabinets work just as effectively and cost far less than going with the top brands. When you save with your cabinets you’ll have more money to put toward better appliances.

Do Install Carpet: While there are a fair number of people who like hardwood in a home, if you’re trying to increase the value of your property you should consider carpet instead. It’s the most widely accepted; while some people like wood most people enjoy carpet. Traditional carpet costs less than hardwood to install and will add the most consistent value to your home.

If you’re planning some Virginia home improvement around your property then take the time to look for other ways in which you can trim your budget. You don’t have to spend top dollar just to add the most value and comfort to your home.

The Code For Sustainable Homes.

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

The Code is a voluntary standard designed to improve the overall sustainability of new homes by setting a single framework within which the home building industry can design and construct homes to higher environmental standards and offers a tool for developers to differentiate themselves within the market.

Builders whose home designs and completed work are assessed under the Code will receive a certificate showing the overall sustainability rating for the home, and a breakdown of how that rating has been achieved.

This mandatory requirement came into effect for all developments where a local authority received the building notice, initial notice or full plans application after 1st May 2008. Developments where a local authority had received these stages on or before 30 April 2008 are exempt. Where Building Regulations apply, compliance is necessary at all times.

The implementation of the Code is managed by BRE Global (formerly BRE Certifi cation Ltd) under contract to the Department for Communities and Local Government under arrangements based on the EcoHomes operating systems. BRE Global is the main license holder.

The Code for Sustainable Homes provides a comprehensive measure of the sustainability of new homes, ensuring that sustainable homes deliver real improvements in key areas such as carbon dioxide emissions and water use.

Mandatory minimum performance standards are set for some issues. For four of these, a single mandatory requirement is set which must be met, whatever Code level is sought. Credits are not awarded for these issues. Confirmation that the performance requirements are met for all four is a minimum entry requirement for achieving a level 1 rating.

At the time of publishing Stroma Ltd is the only other organisation licensed to provide all Code services although several others are in discussions with BRE Global.

The Sustainable Homes is a voluntary standard designed to improve the overall sustainability of new homes by setting a single framework for Sustainable Development.

Have Stamped Concrete Patterns In Your Compound

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

There are so many houses that have installed pavers of some types, or bricks on their pavers and other parts of the compound. There are those that choose to have decorated stamped concrete patterns installed instead of just having the plain look.

This style was started in California and other places picked it up. This is done so that the surfaces will not look dull and boring. The secret of achieving this is to have a person who will be able to work with those materials that will produce the designs that one is looking for.

All this work is something that should be done by a person who has the experience of working with cement because if the work will not be well done, it will crack. The cracks will give way to weeds to grow in between and all the efforts will be destroyed. The best thing will be to have the job properly done so that the owner will not have a hard time maintaining the surface.

The process of fixing the surface is not something that can be done by family and friends, it needs an experienced crew. Working with cement is a craft that will need a person who knows what they are doing. There are special tools that are needed to make sure that the job will be done right. The person will decorate the surface by adding colors and patterns.

The surface that will be laid down will need to be a few inches thick so that it will not be that easy for it to crack. Color can also be added and there are two main ways of doing this. One of the methods is where the color will be added when the cement is being mixed. The other method so that where there will be a release agent that will be used first, before the color can be applied. This will allow the whole surface to have a certain texture in order for the cement to stay firm and not destroy the designs that have been made.

Sometimes a broom will be used to spread the mixture, a mat will then be used to make very beautiful designs and produce a unique look. For the cement that is a bit old, then acid will be used and then the cement will be allowed to dry for twenty four hours. This allows the cement to dry well and to reduce the chances of it cracking. A release agent is finally used to release the pressure and the surface will be washed and a seal will be applied.

When the design of stamping was first used, the builders made it not to be very deep because they thought that the concrete would form cracks. This however, did not happen because cement as a building material is very strong. The only time it would easily crack is when the work of mixing it and fixing it has been poorly done.

Stamped concrete patterns are best done by specialists who will best understand the best mix that will work. These people will know what materials to use so that there will be no problems after the job has been done.

Elite Concrete offers stamped concrete services including stamped concrete patios, driveways and full landscaping designs. Find out why Elite Concrete is one of the top concrete contractors in Toronto and the GTA.

The Sunroom in Virginia – Designing the Perfect Playscape

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

There are few things more enjoyable at home than lounging around in your sunroom in Virginia. The summer months make it enjoyable but it’s something that can be cherished in the winter as well. That’s one of the greatest perks about having a sunroom – you can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors year round. Whether you’re gazing into a heavy winter blizzard or watching the summer rain crash down you’ve got the best seat in the house. Literally.

If you opt for a sunroom to be installed, keep in mind that it’s another room of your home – a true extension. It shouldn’t be treated like an enclosed porch. This space needs as much maintenance as any other room in your home and just as much attention when it comes to the dcor. Enhancing the design of a room can alter the ambiance of a room for the better. Where’s the style and comfort in blank floors and bland colors amid open windows?

When you’re designing your sunroom in Virginia or you’re preparing for a remodel you need make sure that you choose a color scheme that is appealing to your view (the natural world you’ll be looking at), the architecture of the home and your own style preferences. Stick with neutral colors and shades that won’t detract from the wonderful view you have.

While a great number of homeowners keep their sunrooms “curtain free”, it’s not always the best option. While the curtains will remain open while you’re lounging in the sunroom, they can still add a great deal of depth to the color and style of the addition. Likewise, if you want to lounge but the sun is just too intense (which can happen both in summer and winter) you can draw the shades and keep out the painful glare.

Your furniture can also make or break the comfort level inside of your sunroom. Bypass the cheap stuff. Do yourself a favor and avoid buying the patio and lawn furniture for your sunroom. This is meant to be indoor comfort with an outside view not the other way around. Choose wood furniture, wicker or even cozy bean bag furniture to make your sunroom comfortable and fun.

And lastly, the floor needs some special attention. Your sunroom will be taking in a lot of light so you’ll want to make sure that you spring for a treated floor in your Virginia sunroom, one that can take weeks on end of relentless sunlight. With cheaper materials, your flooring may fade. Treat the floor material properly and learn to take care of your sunroom – you’ll be able to enjoy it for years to come.

Paragon Remodeling are nationally awarded and popular Contractors Northern Virginia firm serving Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC. Additionally if you are pondering about a Sunroom Virginia based Paragon ought to be your first port of call. Request a Totally free quote and be eligible for a $1000 discount these days.

Tips for New Home Buyers

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

So you’ve decided to become a homeowner. Congratulations!

Buying a home is one of the biggest and most important purchases most people will ever make in their lifetime. It is no wonder it can be a long and confusing process until you move in, but it is vital to do your homework and think carefully to ensure you will choose a place that will fit your needs and your expectations for years to come.

Meeting with a financial representative to determine a mortgage that you can comfortably afford is a crucial first step. This will ensure you will have a better idea of the types of homes in your price range. Consider getting a pre-approved mortgage to help you shop for a home with added confidence. Generally, you should have five per cent or more of the purchase price of a home for the down payment. You should consider other priorities in your life to determine if this is the right time to be buying a home. Are you recently married, in school or planning on starting a family or a business that will require a good portion of your savings? If you are at a stable place in your life, buying a home will not be too much of a strain in your finances.

Location is everything when searching for a new home. It is important to think about the area you would like to live in to ensure it will mesh well with you and your family. Do you prefer living close to the city or in a suburban town? Will the place be close to schools, hospitals, transportation and shopping centres? Evaluating the lifestyle of your family will help you come up with a must-have list for the location of your new home. Is it important that you be relatively close to jobs and extended family members? Once you decide which geographical features you can and cannot live without you can move further into your home search.

You should also decide if you are planning on buying a new home from a builder or prefer a resale in an established community. If you would like to buy a new home, you can read up on new developments in the home section of major newspapers and real estate publications. It is also recommended you research any home building companies you are considering to find out about their policies and their services. Talk with other recent homebuyers in the area to see if they were satisfied with the level of service they received from the builder. Don’t forget to keep in mind the estimated dates of completion for homes in the new area to decide if they will work well with your tentative moving schedule. If the area has yet to be developed, try inquiring about what future plans will be for nearby schools, hospitals and shopping centres to get an idea of what your neighborhood will be like in the coming years.

If you are looking into a resale, there are some other factors to consider. The age of the home and the amount of renovations that need to be done upon moving in are big factors. You will want to make sure the area is safe, close by to amenities, and well maintained by the municipality. Find out what the property taxes and the homeowners insurance will generally be like for the home, and ensure you have it inspected before the final sale.

Ways To Keep Fish Healthy

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Nearly everyone has looked at a freshwater aquarium within his or her life time. At a friend’s home, a restaurant, a get together, a local business aiming to be noticeable… a lot of people love to maintain fish tanks, and you can find them almost everywhere.

The term ‘aquarium’ in fact originates from the Latin terms ‘Aqua’ which means water (Surprised? Sure, nor are we) and ‘rium’ meaning place or building. Basically, it’s a water building!

There are literally 1000s of different types of freshwater aquarium that you can buy right this moment, and the detailing that can be done is not just extensive – it’s borderline ridiculous.

You can decide on a simple fish bowl which can be found in a lot of children’s houses to a detailed and advanced environment of filtered water, numerous fish, and live plants climbing the extra-strength plastic.

The History of the Fish Tank The present day form of aquariums developed in the 1850′s, however modern day things have a way of echoing traditional pieces. Even the Sumerians had a means of keeping their fish – they had ponds to help keep wild fish in until they were made into supper.

Goldfish and Koi fish were being bred as far back as 2,000 years ago in China, and during the Song dynasty goldfish were kept in ceramic containers. The history is comprehensive, and long!

Even in historic Egyptian artwork, we are able to see a type of aquarium tank – fish were kept in rectangle-shaped temple pools, some thing unique and fascinating and what most of the people don’t even think of when they imagine a fish tank in history.

Trying to keep fish as a hobby really picked up following the First World War (Middle to late 1900′s). While you could see aquariums at museums and more, modern lighting and purification let individuals take care of fish in their home.

Because fish keeping began to take even more root in modern day culture, organizations rushed to generate distinctive and interesting things to put into fish tanks, as well as trying to find better methods to maintain fish healthy, and their water fresh.

This is the main reason that we have so many choices for us when it comes to fish tanks. You can choose from thousands of different items to really make your set up distinctive, exciting, and yes, even fun.

Big Ol’ Aquarium Just about the most impressive fish tanks isn’t in the US, but in Japan – the Osaka aquarium tank holds 5,400 cubic meters of volume, and it actually contains more than 580 species!

How To Make The Most Of Your Roofers Guildford

Friday, November 19th, 2010

To help you locate suitable roofing Guildford services and to better understand the requirements for your roofers Guildford based or otherwise, it is important to learn about the processes and procedures behind roofing.

Whether using roofing Guildford or otherwise, the general structure can be divided into three important factors, namely the material, the construction method and its durability.

The material your roof is made from is mainly dependent on the type of roof it is and where it will be used. Flat roofing, to give an example, can be made from fibreglass or covered with felt to ensure the roof is waterproof and well insulated. Pitched roofs, on the other hand, are composed of roofing tiles, slate or sheets.

A roof’s construction method hinges principally on whether it is pitched and how it will be supported. Apart from in very dry countries where rain water is not a consideration, most domestic buildings have sloped or pitched roofs to allow the water to drain off.

The angle at which a roof rises from its lowest to its highest point it called the ‘pitch’. Different buildings and types of roof will require different pitches, for example, in order to be waterproof a thatched roof must be very steep.

As it is the most important part of a building, in terms of protecting you from the elements, the durability of a roof is a serious matter to consider. The roof is also difficult to reach in terms of repairs so you should always have any minor roofing problems fixed straight away so they do not escalate into something more serious.

The primary function of a roof is to keep you dry so if you notice any leaks you should always contact your roofers Guildford based or local to your home, to fix the problem. Having a new roof installed will be much more expensive than repairing the one you’ve got so keeping on top of your roof maintenance will save you money and time in the long run.

Understanding your roofing requirements can help you to find a suitable provider of roofing Guildford services as well as giving you a better comprehension of the work that needs to be done and whether it is completed to your satisfaction.

Learn more about roofing Guildford. Stop by the Carrington Roofing site where you can find out all about roofers Guildford and what they can do for you.
