How To Clean And Maintain Stucco Exterior

When it comes to house exteriors, stucco is a relatively low-maintenance choice. Still, it does need to be attended to occasionally if you want to keep it in good condition and looking great. Here are some tips for cleaning and maintaining your home’s stucco exterior.

An annual inspection to look for damage and an annual cleaning are good ideas. If you can catch cracks and other breakage early, then they are usually not too difficult to repair. Cleaning once a year is important because the porous openings of stucco tend to collect a lot of dirt. If you live somewhere with unusual weather or unique conditions that will contribute more heavily to your house getting dirty, then more frequent inspections and cleaning are recommended.

Also be sure to inspect for mold caused by moisture seeping into openings. Mold is relatively easy to take care of if you find it early enough. One method you can try is to apply a bit of bleach and let it sit a few minutes. Rinse off the bleach, and there shouldn’t be any mold left. If there is, try some more bleach and a little scrubbing with a soft brush. If you still have mold after rinsing again, then you’ll have to hire a professional before the problem gets any worse.

A garden hose is sufficient for cleaning exterior stucco, but a power washer can also be used. Start by spraying the wall near the ground. As the dirt washes away, move to the next higher section of the wall, spraying away all dirt and working your way to the top until the entire wall has been covered. Any dirt that runs off should be rinsed away. Often, this procedure is enough for a basic annual cleaning.

Sometimes there will be exceptionally dirty or stained sections that require a bit more attention. In this case, some mild soap and water can be used with a soft scrub brush. Be sure to rinse away any soap left after the area is clean.

Once the entire wall is clean, then you can start looking for any damage that might need repairing. Small cracks can usually be filled with caulk. Larger cracks will need to be well cleaned out and filled with a mortar mix.

At times you might find damage that can only be fixed by a professional. Consult an expert if you find vertical cracks, because these can indicate issues with the foundation of your house. Other jobs that you should leave to professionals include water damage, significant amounts of mold, termites, or serious structural damage.

Just to be clear, these tips are for real stucco siding only, not for the synthetic type. Synthetic requires an entirely different maintenance and cleaning routine. If you don’t know whether you have the real kind or synthetic, there are some simple ways to tell. Synthetic will sound hollow rather than solid when you knock on it. It’s also not as hard and stable if you push on it.
